The Beginning of The End- Book 1

The Beginning of The End - Book 1

Screaming, . . . I hear screaming, where is this coming from, I think to myself as I awaken.  There is banging on the main entrance, as I run to open the door I pick up my 45. magnum, the only thing that seems to work against these monsters. The screaming gets louder and louder as the banging continues, when I open the door a frantic girl comes bursting in and immediately slams the door shut.

"What's wrong, who are you?" I ask.

"They found our safe house, everything, all of it destroyed. So much work for security and now its all gone!" she says in tears. "The aliens killed all of my family, they're dead, they're all dead!"

"Ugh damn things, you'll be safe here for now, I have enough food and water to share. My name is Randel Nestor, but people call me Rezz for short."

As I look at this sobbing girl waiting for her to respond, I then realize how long its been since this all started, the pain and suffering, the constant feeling of being alone. as she looked at me I saw fear in her eyes, her quivering lips steadied enough for her to speak, "Thank you so much for helping me."

"Hey it's an ugly world out there an I know that you would probably do the same for me."

She laughed and wiped her face as she said, "My name is Rachel."

"It's not much but it's safe, and there's a place for you to sleep." I say as I show her to the spare room in my safe house.

She yawns lies down on the bed and says, "Maybe now I can finally get some rest." and rolls over.

Within seconds Rachel is sleeping and I wonder if there are anymore survivors. With that thought at mind I climb to the top of my safe house and scan for any sign of life or resistance shelter flare signals. All I see is ruble from fallen cities that use to be beautiful and flourishing with life before it was all destroyed by the aliens. .  .  .  .

"Randal! . . . Get up Randal!"

"Mom my first class doesn't start for two hours, can you please just let me sleep?!"

"Well I'm leaving for work now, don't be late on your first day of college, Love you!" my mom says as she closes the front door.

"Great now I can't go back to sleep." I say under my breath.

I started to blast some Aerosmith while I get ready for school and cook up some breakfast. Bacon, fries, and cheesecake, my three favorite foods for the most important meal of the day. After I finished chowing down, I grabbed my keys and wallet, packed my backpack, and headed out the door. As I hopped on my Ducati I notice the sky is darker then usual, such a dark omonous grey, so depressing it seemed to suck the life and happiness out of the world.

With ten minutes to get to class I raced down the street swerving through traffic barely making it past each light alive. I parked my bike and took off in a full sprint across campus to get to my class before the professor closes the door on me. I could see my class in the distance, the professor began to walk out to close the door, making it just in time to catch the door before it was pulled shut I yanked it open and stumbled into class.

"How nice of you to join us today, I believe you are Mr. Nestor, correct? I heard about you from a colleague, you were on the news." he said with a smirk.

"Yes I am, is there a Problem?" I said sternly.

"Not at all Mr. Nestor, but I do have a question for you. What did NASA say to you after you had explained your theory of aliens coming down to earth to take over the world two years ago?"

"Well professor, NASA told me I was insane, that there no sign of alien life. All my college scholarship offers were revoked and my dreams of becoming an astrophysicist went down the drain. So now I'm at this dump of a community college."

"Hahaha welcome to the real world, sit anywhere you'd like, that is if you can even find a seat."

I quickly spotted a seat near the back by the window, as I made my way up the steps to the seat I can hear giggling, whispering,  and tapping of anxious students. Beatty eyes all fixed on me, as if I was some sort of freak show.

"Okay class, now that we're all here, welcome to your first day of Astronomy" says the professor. "Today we will be talking about the fluctuation of stars."

As I stare at the sky through the window the professors voice begins to fade out and everything around me goes dark and I feel like my existence is irrelevant to the world as I wonder how I could've been wrong about the aliens. There is no possible way that human race is the only life forms in the universe. I had watched and recorded the stars movements for three years prior to the NASA report and that year it was completely different, I knew something was going to happen, but so far I've just been wrong. A sudden shaking brought me back to reality as a girl screams, "Earthquake!"

"Please proceed to take cover under your desk" a voice says over the intercom. "this is not a drill, I repeat, this is not a drill."

I see a flash of light course through the sky ripping through every thing in its way, planes exploded and plumitted to the ground as some sort of meteor came barreling out from the tear in the sky towards earth in blazing flames. Stumbling out of my seat I began to sprint for the door, from the corner of my eye I see the meteor getting closer and closer through the window. I dash out the door and get knocked to the ground from the impact. I lay on the floor with ruble flying past me, I watch the buildings crumpling before my very eyes, the meteor tears through building after building as it comes to a stop a couple yards from my feet. Startled by the whole event I lay frozen on the ground.

While starring at this metallic silver rock a wave of glowing green passes over its entire surface, I then realized this was no rock, but a ship. Blue gas is released from small openings on the front of the ship as it's depressurizing, the gas begins to roll over me, swelling my throat and making my vision blurry. I feel tears run down my face, I wipe them and see red and notice that my eyes are bleeding, struggling to get off the ground a human like figure emerges from the ship and walks towards me. I can see him clearly now as the gas begins to clear out, he's towering over me. The alien has on a bionic suit, his body larger than normal humans and he stares at me through his helmet, orange eyes ready to kill. His helmet has three pipes in the front coated in gold releasing blue gas every time he exhaled. He rases his arm and in his greyish-green hand held by four fingers is some sort of weapon, with the barrel pointed straight at me I see something inside starting to spin. electricity is jolting around deep in the chamber as what seems to be an energy beam is being charged.

My throat keeps getting tighter and I am short of breath, with my eyes still bleeding everything looks a little blurred and red. This is it I think to myself, excepting my fate I close my eyes, thinking back to all of my favorite memories of life.

Clank!

I open my eyes to the sight of purple goo fly through the air as the aliens now lifeless body collapses to the ground with a piercing thud. Startled by the feeling of someone's arms around my body I tried to get to my feet, within seconds I was dragged and pulled into the back of a military jeep. The tires burn out and the car speeds off with dust clouds rolling behind it.

"Are You hurt?" asked a man dressed in military gear, "I'm geneal Hughes. You're lucky Private Frost is a great shot, if it weren't for him, . . . well lets just say you wouldn't be here right now."

"I'm fine, just a bit confused. that was an alien right?" I replied.

"I'm afraid it was, that crazy son of a bitch from T.V. was right took a year for the aliens to come but they're here now. They've landed in all major cities in the world."

"I was right!" looking at me very confused i tell him, "i was the kid on T.V. Everyone thought i was crazy but i was right, now i wish i wasn't."

"Don't we all, we're going to take you to the resistance shelter in L.A. you'll be safe there. It's heavily gaurded and stocked with supplies, all survivors from Southern California are staying there untill all this alien crap blows over. Private Frost and i need head back out to look for more survivors."

"I'm going with you, my mother is out there and i need to make sure she's okay. If that means risking my own life so be it."

"You're going to the shelter and staying there you have no choice. It's too dangerous out there for you kid, tell us where she is and we'll see if we can find her."

I pause for a moment as loud whistle catches my attention, "do you guys hear that?" I say. My heart begins to race, it feels as though its going to break out of my chest, my palms are dripping with sweat.

"Get down!" general hughes yells.

Boom!

The humvy is flying through the air, i see everything in slow motion. Through the windsheild i see the city upside down, missles exploding on the street and buildings calapsing on each other. General hughes is being thrown around the humvy cabin like a rag doll, Private Frost is strapped in but unconcious from the explosion. I see Private Frost's head out the window, the humvy is upside down, i reach to pull him in but he was to far. Hitting the ground the humy crushed his head on the street. Still rolling in the wreck, General hughes gets ejected by the force of the rotation through the window and the huvy finally comes to a stop crashing into a building. My body is numb, blood running down my face from a cut on my head. The sight of Private Frost's decapitated body makes me sick, with my stomach churning I work my way out of the wreck.

"Kid! Kid please help me! I can't move, hurry they're coming!" hughes yells.

I wasnt able to see through all the dust left by the explotions, "Where are you?!" I called out to hughes. There was no reply, I began to run through the thick dust in the direction I had heard his voice come from. The dust began to clear out, I can see the general off in the distance crawling up street. I began to regain feeling in my body and i can feel everything aching from the crash. A gust of wind knocks me to the ground as an alien flys past me and lands by Hughes. The alien closes his hand on Hughes' head and slowly lifts it up, his back is arched and he keeps saying, "no, please no"! The aliens other hand reaches to his back, he pulls out a shiny silver blade with a green sheen to it, holds it close to hughes' neck and in one swift move slices his throat, with the head still in his grip as the blood spews out of Hughes' body the alien screams in triumph. I see the look of pain and desperation in Hughes' eyes, I Hear the sound of him choking on his own blood as his eyes roll back into his head and his life slowly and painfully slips away.

My legs buckle from under me and i colapse to my knees, the sound of slow steps coming my way was very faint but enough to make me realize i was next. the foot steps got faster and faster, i finally looked up to see the alien at a full sprint at me. Struggling to get to my feet i remembered that i wasnt to far from the humvy, there had to be something i could use againt the alien in there. Through the window i saw a revolver on Frost's hip. I crawl through the wreck, un holster it, cock it, turn over, close my eyes and pull the trigger. I open my eyes to the sound of clanking metal and the sight of sparks as the alien slides towards me on the ground. I scramble to my feet and without questioning wether or not it was dead i grabbed its blade cocked the gun and sprinted down the street. In shock from everything that had just happened all i can think about is my mom, I have to get her and make sure she's okay.

I looked up to check where I was and see a sign "6th & Bixby Way" I'm almost to her building I thought, with my legs feeling weak and a slight faint feeling I continue to to push forward. Her building is still partially intact with chunks ,issuing from the sides and a few of the floors missing off the top. As I look around the city seems to have calmed down, not a person in sight and not a single thing to be heard. Rushing inside to get to my moms floor I feel my heart drop, the whole place is destroyed from the inside as if it had been raided, bolting up the stairs I begin to stumble as my legs give up on me. Forcing myself through the pain I make it up 18 flights of stairs and burst through the door to see everything but the walls standing, the flickered and I heard a constant high pitch buzz as I yell out for my mother.

        "Randal! Is that you?"

"Mom are you okay I came to make sure you're okay! Where are you?" I yelled.

Sobbing she comes running from behind a turned over desk, "I'm right here son!"

As she gets to me she throws herself into my arms and with my body weak we both collapse to the ground as I catch her. Holding my mother in my arms I begin to cry as everything that had just happened begins to hit, I just keep hoping it's a dream and waiting to wake up but it's all to real. Aliens are here.

"Come on mom we gotta get out of here, I was told that they have a shelter set up to keep people safe" I said as I help my mother to her feet.

"Randal how're we going to get there? The streets aren't safe!"

As I wiped her tears off her face I reassured her that everything is going to be okay, as we began to head down the stairs the who building starts to tremble, fearing that the building was about to collapse we frantically rushed down the stairs to get to the ground floor. I felt the stairs beginning to crumble beneath my feet, my mothers hand slips out from my grasp as I feel the ground drop from under my feet. I saw the world in slow motion as the building collapses, frantically reaching to grab my mother I had no control of where I was sticking plummeting into towards the debris. My heart shot into my throat at the sight of my mothers body catch a stray rebar right through her chest, I see her blood spew out and the pain and agony in her eyes.

Nothing matters to me anymore, the only person that believed and cared for me is now gone.

I'm still falling, I close my eyes and wait to hit the ground, I just want it all to be over. My body slams on the ground and I can heard the thud echo of of the fallen concrete, everything began to fade in an out as I struggled to breath, no matter how hard I try I can't  take a breath. It feels like the whole world is pushing down on my chest. During the split seconds that I can see everything seemed to just stop feet away from my face. I can breath again, It's only short shallow breaths but I can breath.

I can feel the floor under me still rumbling as the building crashes down. I have no feeling in my arms, the back of my head feels wet, a have a headache that gets worse with each pulse of my heart. I'm fading in and out of consciousness, I begin to panic as I feel everything just fade away and turn to black.

I awaken to the feeling of something warm dripping on my face, I reach up to wipe it, a see a red hue? It's blood. I feel pain all over my body flood into me as if I just got hit by a truck. I can't seem to compose myself, everything that is happening is too overwhelming. Looking at the blood on my hands I can't help but feel that my mothers death was my fault. If only I made it sooner she would still be alive. From between my fingers a beam of light blinds me, I have got to get out of here and that's my way out.
